Zeph Smith, SLCC Mathematics Department
BIO
I am from Salt Lake and graduated from Highland High, The University of Utah, and again from the University of Utah. I have a Masters of Science in Mathematics. I have taught at SLCC in the math department for many years, and served as a tutor in the Learning Center before that for about 5 years. I have a son and a daughter. I am the principle percussionist for the Salt Lake Symphony and enjoy playing the piano as well. If you would like to hear some original music, I have one below, as well as several other pieces on SoundCloud, listed under Zen Pi Productions. Teaching Philosophy My belief is that all students can do mathematics. Perhaps it takes some more time than others, but math is just logic, relationships, patterns and processes. We as humans do this all of the time. I also think that math should not be a timed sport, given that we don't learn at the same pace. Therefore I try to teach at a pace dictated by student response, and test in ways that allow for students to demonstrate performance regardless of time available. I also understand that math is taught with a rigorous schedule. This can train the brain for quick thinking, which is beneficial in all aspects of life. Perhaps the best thing about teaching early college level mathematics is it is a great laboratory for understanding all of the structures a student needs to succeed. The number of emotions that come up for students in a math environment allows for students to create more effective techniques for working effectively regardless of circumstance. You can do math and I will do what I can to assist you to make it happen. Original Piano Improvisation |
